Chapter Fourteen

Ronnie

Kasey sits down on the dressing room bench beside me. “That was insane. Are you okay?”

I wipe the sweat from my forehead with the back of my arm. “Yeah, that was fun. Good stuff.”

“I didn’t know you and Wyatt were an item.”

Biting back my reflexive reply of ‘we’re not’, I shrug. “It’s really new. We’re just getting together.” I force myself to focus on Russ’ plan and not blow it right out of the gate. That performance I just gave was so horrible, I can’t believe Kasey bought it. Too inside my own head, I held back to keep the audience and anyone else who watched from seeing how far gone I am for Wyatt. This situation is crazy. I’ve been half in love with him for two years, and now we’re pretending to be in a relationship. But I don’t want to be too convincing, even though I’m supposed to be. I run my hand over my forehead. Honestly, I’m confusing myself.

How the hell am I going to manage to keep this up when we’re not in the ring?

“You guys have some mad chemistry. I’ve always noticed it and I’m actually surprised it’s taken you this long to act on it. Is this just a storyline angle, or is this for real?”

Maybe she didn’t buy my performance after all.

“No, it’s the real deal. It’s only taken this long because I didn’t want to get involved with someone I work with, but sometimes the heart wants what the heart wants.”

My words ring so true, I pause and think about them. Maybe all I have to do is let my feelings show and not care what anyone else thinks. Stop overthinking things and let it happen.

Wyatt isn’t oblivious. He has to have an idea of how I feel about him even though I’ve been suppressing these emotions for so long.

Tonight was only the first of many performances where this storyline will play out. I need to cut myself some slack. Once I get past the initial awkwardness, it shouldn’t be so difficult.

“There are quite a few ladies who aren’t pleased with this new development,” Kasey informs me.

“Let me guess, Laura and her little group of mean girls?”

My friend’s eyes sweep across the room to the female wrestlers we’re talking about and she nods. “Yep, you got that right.”

“Well, I can’t say I care what they think anyway. I’m going to live my life the way that’s best for me and their opinions don’t weigh in on what I do.” I finish putting my things in my bag and rise, slinging the strap over my shoulder. “Do you want a ride back to the hotel? I’m going with Wyatt and Jesse.”

“You go on ahead. I told one of the security guys I’d grab a drink with him tonight.”

“Look at you getting back on the horse.” Kasey had a rough break up recently with Jeff, another wrestler. From the sound of it, he was a better boyfriend to her than I imagined, but she couldn’t deal with women throwing themselves at him all the time.
